BFI delivery
Your accessibility partner to make your films BFI compliant.
Make your film BFI compliant
When you get British Film Institute (BFI) funding for your film, we can help with compliance, as we have done with plenty of films before.
Our friendly account management team will walk you through the process if you’re unsure which services you need. For BFI-funded films, typically, you will need SDH and audio description for your film.
And from the start of your project until the end, our team provides dedicated support to help you, as a Director or Creative Producer, get your film out there.
Zoya Films, the London-based production company, came to us for BFI compliance and their film was shown at the Bolton Film Festival.

“Audio description was a requirement as part of our BFI delivery, but more importantly, it allowed us to make the film accessible to a wider audience.”
What does our process look like?
Perhaps it’s your first time dealing with a BFI-funded film and you don’t know where to start. We can provide a free media accessibility consultation to provide guidance on the best next steps, whether you’re at development stage, pre-production, production or post-production stage.
If you do have experience with BFI-funded films, you can come to us and we can provide a quick turnaround on your film.
Once we have agreed on the solutions to get your film where it needs to be, we get in touch with our expert linguists, varying from voice over artists to captioners, and get the ball rolling.
Throughout the process, we will keep in touch with you about the timing of deliverables to meet any deadlines. Following our deliverables being ready, we complete human quality assurance (QA), led by our expert team.

BFI-compliant films that work for you and your audience
We appreciate that if it’s your first time dealing with a BFI-funded film as a Director or Creative Director it can be daunting, but that’s where our experience with BFI-funded films comes in (and we’ve had plenty since 2014).
And if you have been through it all before, you know how the process works. We’re here to make it as simple as possible for you.
We combine fast turnaround times with excellent quality to meet your needs for your film.
And we know it’s what your audience deserves too. If you’re happy, that means they’re happy. Then, (you guessed it!) we’re all happy!
How often does VoiceBox support BFI-funded films?
VoiceBox supports several BFI-funded films every year, sometimes multiple per month. Of course, as you can imagine, this figure varies.
How does your human quality assurance (QA) work?
At VoiceBox, our quality assurance (QA) process is managed by experienced in-house project managers across all of our services. The team coordinates specialist reviewers and checks each project against the source material and the client’s requirements. This includes accuracy, terminology, consistency, timing, formatting, audio quality and overall presentation.
For example, in subtitling, the project manager ensures that the translation is reviewed and that the timecodes, reading speed, line breaks, punctuation and synchronisation meet the required standards. A final project-level check then confirms that the completed files are accurate and ready for delivery.
Is AI allowed for BFI funded films?
The BFI's current AI guidance allows the use of AI in funded projects, provided it is used responsibly and with appropriate human oversight.
It does require that the accessibility materials provided are accurate, fit for purpose, and meet the relevant accessibility requirements. Raw AI may not do that, so human post-editing or human subtitling and human voiceovers may be needed.
We will always be honest and open about human and AI services, and which may be suited to your specific project and needs.
What does your process look like for audio description?
As an audio description agency, this is what our process looks like:
- Audio description script writing — we craft engaging scripts that capture essential on-screen actions, expressions and visual cues. Every script can also be translated for other languages.
- Voice casting — we match you with a professional audio describer whose clear voice will complement your existing audio and ensure accessibility.
- Studio recording — broadcast-quality narration is recorded by our trusted voice artists and refined by our audio engineers.
- Post-production — we sync and master the audio description track so it blends seamlessly with your original soundtrack. We can deliver as a standalone audio file or fully integrated into your video.
How do your subtitling projects work?
We keep subtitling simple, without compromising on quality. As a provider of professional subtitling services, this is how our projects work:
- Transcription — we create time-coded, subtitle-ready scripts.
- Optional translation & localisation — our native linguists can translate your subtitles into 220+ language pairs, ensuring cultural accuracy.
- Subtitle creation — we format subtitles to industry best practice for readability and timing.
- Delivery — choose from SRT, VTT, burned-in, or any format you need.
Do you offer pro bono projects?
Yes, we offer a limited amount of pro bono projects across a year, so there are no guarantees. In exchange, we’d be looking for a case study about the service provided.
What is audio introduction?
Audio introduction provides essential visual context at the start of a video, programme or scene, describing key elements such as setting, characters, costumes and visual style.
This upfront introduction helps audiences follow and engage with the content more confidently as it unfolds.
Audio introduction is particularly effective for short-form content, live recordings, events, performances and productions where full audio description may not be practical.
Does VoiceBox support with other compliance?
Yes, VoiceBox helps production companies and producers stay compliant with other demands such as Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code, as well as broadcaster and streaming service specifications (such as Channel 4’s closed caption requirement on adverts).
