What is Braille?

Braille is a tactile reading and writing system that uses raised dots in patterns to represent letters, numbers and punctuation, allowing people to read by touch.

It's important to note that Braille is not a language in itself, but a writing system that many languages use. 

How does the Braille code work?

Each Braille character (often called a “cell”) consists of up to six raised dots arranged in a matrix of three rows by two columns.

Users read Braille by moving their fingertips across embossed lines of dots. 

What is Braille used for?

Braille enables literacy and independence for people who are blind or have low vision who use Braille. However, please remember that not every blind or partially sighted person learns or uses Braille. 

It is used for books, signage (such as elevator buttons and door numbers), labelling items (for example on packaging or pharmaceuticals) and on digital devices via refreshable Braille displays.

Can Braille be used for languages other than English?

Yes! The Braille system is adapted for multiple languages worldwide. Each language may have its own Braille code or variant.
